Analysis of experimental activities in chemistry textbooks for primary schools
Špísová, Klára ; Rusek, Martin (advisor) ; Beneš, Pavel (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze experimental activities in chemistry textbooks for primary schools in the Czech Republic. The types of activities and their placement in the phases of teaching, cognitive demand are examined. The analysis includes the most used textbooks of chemistry - textbooks by Fortuna: Základy chemie 1, 2 and Základy praktické chemie 1, 2. Textbooks by Nová škola, Fraus and Taktik for 8th and 9th grade. All textbooks contain suggestions for practical activities, most of them are in the ZCH, FR and NŠ textbooks. Different types of activities are identified in the chemistry textbooks, such as independent student activity, observation of teacher demonstration, laboratory work, watching videos, pictures and solving problems. Independent student activity and observation of teacher demonstration are the most common. FR and T textbooks also offer interactivity through videos. Practical topics focus mainly on the exposure phase of the lesson. In terms of the development of cognitive operations, the tasks in the chemistry textbooks focus on lower-level operations such as memorization, comprehension, and application. Higher operations, especially the development of making, was mainly in the textbooks for grade 8. The textbooks published by NŠ had a balanced representation for both grades.
Evaluation of lower-secondary chemistry textbooks' visual representations in the topics of acids, bases and neutralisation
Krumlová, Eliška ; Rusek, Martin (advisor) ; Bílek, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis is focused on the analysis of visual components used in chemistry textbooks for lower-secondary schools in the Czech Republic in the topic of acids, bases and neutralization. In the first part, attention is paid to the theory of textbooks, their development, research and the triple representation of visuals in the natural sciences. The following sections describe the objectives, methods and results of the thesis. The aim was to analyse the visual components used in the topic of acids, bases and neutralization in chemistry textbooks for the eighth grade of lower-secondary school. Furthermore, the aim of this thesis was to compare textbooks based on the total number of representation of individual components (quantity and proportions). The performed analysis complements the current overview of the representation of visual components. It was found that Fraus publishing house textbooks have the most represented images in the analysed topic, and on the other hand Nová škola textbooks include the least representation. The analysis further showed that most textbooks contain no sub-micro representations on acids, bases and neutralization. This representation can be found only in the textbooks published by Fraus and in the textbook Hravá chemie (Playful chemistry) published by Taktik....
Evaluating Difficulty of Chemistry Textbooks for Vocational Schools
Vosyková, Lucie
TITLE: Evaluation of the text difficulty of chemistry textbooks for secondary vocational schools AUTHOR: Lucie Vosyková DEPARTMENT: Katedra chemie a didaktiky chemie SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Martin Rusek, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This thesis builds on previous researches of textbooks for primary, secondary and grammar schools and focuses on the analysis of the text difficulty of chemistry textbooks for secondary vocational schools of non-chemical focus. The aim of this work is to analyse the text difficulty of chemistry textbooks for non-chemical high schools, using the Nestlerova-Prucha-Pluskal method, to compare the text difficulty of chemistry textbooks for non-chemical high schools with primary and secondary school textbooks, and last but not least, to compare the text difficulty of particular chapters of choosen textbooks for primary and secondary schools. The results of the analysis are intended to provide teachers seeking support for their teaching with a possible criteria for a textbook selection. Based on the findings, the five analyzed series of textbooks can be divided into two groups. The first group consists of textbooks published by Scientia and Fortuna, whose text difficulty is at an appropriate level with a lower rate of technical terms. The other group consists of two textbooks published by SPN and...
Environmental Aspects of Chemistry Teaching and Learning at High School
Schmutzerová, Linda
The abstract The main aim of the dissertation was to find out the level of knowledge and opinions of secondary technical and especially grammar school students in the field of Chemistry focusing on environmental problems of these days and their solutions. As a follow up of the research and the analysis of the current curriculum in Chemistry in grammar schools there are suggestions for some amendments in this subject. First of all, current trends of the environmental studies in different years of the educational system were monitored and the research results of preparation, realization and evaluation in secondary technical and grammar schools were analysed. In order to find out the level of environmental aspects in the content of the Chemistry textbooks currently in use at grammar schools, they were analysed by focusing on their eco-oriented content, the useable parts in each chapter were evaluated and some recommendations for their amendments were offered. Selected grammar school and secondary technical school students undertook the survey in order to find out their knowledge and opinions about the current environmental problems. The method of the research was conducted in the form of research questions and relevant hypothesis which was focused on finding out attitudes and opinions about the creation and...
